Your New Life Plan - Did You Know About It?
No? Neither had many of the people with disability, family members and other Divas who will be actively living the Plan over the next five years. Its supposed to be the building blocks for the National Disability Strategy, which was (gently) applauded by people with disability and their families.
But it seemed that the First Plan, upon reading, didn't make much sense. Worse, the select few (peak bodies) who were tasked with asking us what we thought about it didn't have enough time to do it over the Christmas break. The original First Report (badged 'in confidence') is available for viewing above - one of the peaks uploaded it for us to have a look. Kudos to those disability sector groups who have been working hard over their holidays to try and put forward their perspectives - we hope they will be bolshy ones. We deserve more.
The Divas read the First Report, and their response to peak bodies, governments and others is here. The Perspective is a critical Diva analysis of the First Report, with thanks to another Bolshy man who spoke words of wisdom - the Great Dr Seuss.
If you want to do something helpful, contact your Premier, peak body or MP and send them a loud, clear message -
'From the four million Australians with disability in Australia, and our families - if you want to know how to plan our lives, ask us first. Its not good enough - do it again.'
